Skills

I have a wide variety of experience in most aspects of web building, including content migration, localized site generation, and design, estimation, and completion of web and non-web based technical tasks. Being experienced and educated in communications and advertising along with a work background in technology development gives me a uniquely robust overview and ability to manage web projects. Not only do I understand how things need to work from a technical end but also how they need to interface with users.

My web-related work experience includes management of eCommerce for the largest insurer in Idaho and architecting, developing, and implementing a localized content system handling Japanese and English languages. I've also worked in development teams for solutions in wireless communication, laser printers, system development tools, and real estate.

Management Skills

All of the networks and equipment in the world have yet to isolate the human element. Web and software implementations may work with machines, but the end result is for people. Web management involves balancing the needs and priorities of people on all sides of the web site.

Content management: Experienced in overseeing the published information for a large company and formulating strategy for online placement and migration of data. I've worked with a variety of data sources, and information in multiple languages. As the e-Commerce administrator at Blue Cross of Idaho, I was responsible for identifying and managing the flow of content to the Internet from a major employer in Idaho. This was a large undertaking, involving cooperation from departments throughout the company.

Prioritization: Especially when working at a larger company, at times it seems most every department needs something done now. Being able to weigh priorities and define goals accordingly is critical. A substantial benefit of having experience in marketing, technology development, and customer support is being able to understand the importance of various tasks and allocate resources accordingly.

Out-of-house contractors: Web projects are rarely done 100% in-house. I have experience with a variety of contractors including graphic artisits, photographers, application service providers, and programming consultants. Having an indepth understanding of web-based projects end-to-end allows me to make informed decisions regarding necessary services and appropriate costs.

Technical Skills

I have over a decade of professional computing experience, including six years of experience as the top web person at my place of work. I am very capable with server-side programming (PHP and Perl), JavaScript, Style Sheets, imaging and complex cross-browser compatible HTML. I have a proven success record with search engine optimizations. When searching for Texas Instrument parts supported by RidgeRun in May of 2002, RidgeRun would show up on top, followed by TI.

Solution Architecting: Defining needs, evaluating of options, defining actions, and delivering. The most complex technical task I've led to completion to date was the creation of the RidgeRun English and Japanese web sites. I generally look for an open source solution when possible but there were none at the time which met the needs of the company, and commercial packages reviewed started at over $80,000. The best solution was to create a content display architecture in-house which handled both languages.

Content migration: Besides defining content flows within companies, I have also converted content originating from the following applications for web use:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Quark XPress
  • Adobe FrameMaker
  • Microsoft Access
  • Microsoft Powerpoint
  • Adobe Pagemaker
  • OpenOffice.org
  • Peer-to-peer content distribution design
  • Automated systems for migration of data from databases.
