DSPLinux embedded Linux for TI DSP hardware

DSPLinux TI DSPs and Linux make an ideal combination for many embedded tasks. RidgeRun takes Linux and focuses it into a robust TI DSP specific distribution called DSPLinux. Two key pieces make up DSPLinux; an operating system taylored to run on hardware with supported TI dual-core DSPs, and development tools for both x86 Intel-based Linux workstation and TI EVM boards. RidgeRun's DSPLinux operating system is designed to reduce hardware requirements, which in turn reduces hardware costs and allows the device to be more compact with a longer battery life. The DSPLinux development tools expedite rapid time to market by allowing for more efficient development and testing.

DSPLinux operating system distribution features include:

  • Memory Management and Code Compression Technology
  • MicroBridge: Load and control code on the DSP
  • TaskBridge: Allows DSP tasks to access Linux file system, sockets, devices
  • SmartMedia and USB client drivers
  • On-screen display driver: Supports framebuffer output
  • CCD controller interface
Development Tools for x86 Linux workstations:
  • Appliance Simulator: Allows DSPLinux to run on a desktop PC within a simulated embedded device
    • Create and debug applications before running on actual hardware.
    • Use the same cross-compile tools as needed for the actual target.
    • Deploy full on-screen simulation of the embedded device (including LCD, hardware buttons and housing).
    • Simulate constrained memory conditions with configurable kernel.
    • Develop for connected devices with built-in network support.
  • Open Development Tools including:
    • Compiler (gcc)
    • Linker (ld)
    • Assembler (as)
    • Standard C library (glibc)
    • Debugger (gdb)
    • Utility programs for software development

DSP Market Growth Tied to Wireless
Digital wireless continues to fuel the majority of DSP market growth, with many new markets in portable devices coming on strong. Worldwide programmable DSP chip shipments for the year 2000 came in at just over 6.1 billion.
