Texas Instruments Partners with RidgeRun TM and Ingenient to Deliver the Industry's First Linux-based DSP Solution for Streaming Video Multimedia Devices
Developers Incorporating Digital Video Reap Benefits of TI's Dual-core Processor, Linux Flexibility and Connectivity and MPEG-4 Video
DALLAS, TX and BOISE, ID - September 20, 2001 - Driving the development of emerging Linux-based digital media applications, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN), Ingenient Technologies, Inc. and RidgeRun, Inc. today announced the availability of an embedded Linux TM operating system for TI's imaging digital signal processor (DSP) solution, enabling faster and easier development of streaming video multimedia devices. RidgeRun will provide its DSPLinux TM operating system and Board Support Package (BSP) for the innovative TI imaging platform, and Ingenient will integrate its MPEG-4 technology, a premier streaming media standard. (See http://www.ti.com/sc/digitalcamera.)
The new offering is the first of its kind, enabling developers of next generation multimedia portable appliances, such as digital cameras, digital video camcorders, portable media players and Webpads, to take advantage of the flexibility and connectivity of the DSPLinux platform with Ingenient's MPEG-4 streaming media technology. The Ingenient solution harnesses the image processing strengths of TI's C54xTM-based TMS320DSC24, a low-power, programmable DSP imaging platform, while DSPLinux offers developers an easy way to access MPEG-4 and other multimedia algorithms running on the DSP from the Linux kernel.
"Today's announcement is an extension of our mission to work with customers and partners to facilitate software development efforts for new digital imaging applications," said Dr. Raj Talluri, business manager of the Imaging Business Unit at TI. "Many of our customers have been asking for a Linux-based solution to ease their application development and share a common platform across a broad range of products. Combining the reliability and strong networking capabilities of RidgeRun's DSPLinux with the efficiency of Ingenient's MPEG-4 algorithm and the image processing power of the DSC24, we've created a robust value proposition for companies developing applications that require a high-performance video processing solution at a low price point."
"The world of streaming media is progressing rapidly towards an Internet infrastructure that supports high-bandwidth, on-demand multimedia -- anytime, anywhere," said RidgeRun CTO Phil Verghese. "Thanks to TI and Ingenient, we're able to fulfill a need in the market to run Linux on this platform enabling innovative software solutions for the next generation of multimedia devices."
